What’s “Tellus Trainer”? An e-learning service that you can learn satellite data analysis at home!
Our e-learning service, "Tellus Trainer,” allows you to learn satellite data analysis at home. But how does it work? In this article, we would like to explain it in detail.
Hi, I am Hironaka and in charge of public relations for the satellite data platform, Tellus. I’m writing this article to tell you about Tellus Trainer, which starts accepting applications from Tuesday, November 1st. On February 21, 2019, Tellus, the cloud service from SAKURA internet Inc., started. So anyone can conduct analysis and development utilizing satellite data, free of charge.
It allows anyone who registers an account, to use satellite data, which used to be very expensive and not readily available.
Tellus Satellite Boot Camp finished on a high note
Tellus Satellite Boot Camp is an event that teaches you how to analyze satellite data using Tellus.
In the event, you can learn the basics of satellite data and programing, the procedures for satellite data analysis using Tellus, and practical analyses through the learning exercises and 2-day training session.
Fortunately, this year’s event, just like last year’s, was highly successful. About 290 people applied for 50 available seats in Tokyo, and about 120 applied for 30 seats in Osaka. (The details will be available later in a separate report on Sorabatake.)
We, the Tellus operation team, feel that people who would like to try using satellite data or who wish to make innovations using satellite data are increasing.
Following the successful Tellus Satellite Boot Camp, on Thursday, November 21, 2019, we are releasing Tellus Trainer, e-learning material from which you can learn more comprehensively and conveniently, what was taught during the event.
People who could not participate in the event can use this material to catch up on what was taught and take the first step to becoming a data scientist.
Tellus Trainer allows anyone to learn and analyze satellite data
Here, I am going to tell you about the latest information on Tellus Trainer and its attraction.
The aim of Tellus Trainer is to facilitate use and promotion of Tellus and, eventually, to further invigorate the space business in Japan by increasing the number of data scientists.
Features and Content
The content allows you to acquire the skill set coherently from the basics of satellite data and understanding of formats to how to put a data set for machine learning, basics of data science/AI, practical analyses, and how to apply deep learning for satellite data.
Materials (subject to change)
[What you can learn with this material]
– Fundamental principles of satellite data and analysis methods
– The satellite data analysis method intended for Tellus
– Machine learning skills using Python
How to sign up for Tellus Trainer
For applications, please go to this Peatix page and complete the questionnaire shown.
Once you submit the questionnaire, an e-mail will be sent to your registered e-mail address. Please follow the instructions in this e-mail to open material.

Not ready for analyzing data yet?
You may think that you do not know what can be done with satellite data, or your work has nothing to do with satellite data.
We organize study sessions and community events that you can easily participate in and solve any concerns such as “I am totally unsure if I can use satellite data for an existing business,” “I feel I am not ready yet to start satellite or any other data analysis,” or “I do not know where to begin.”
Tellus Open Discussion
Tellus Open Discussion is a seminar where you can learn how to utilize satellite data in a practical manner in such industries as freight, transit, administration, local government, telecommunications, energy, insurance, and finance, as an effort to facilitate the use of satellite data for business purposes in Japan. In addition, you can also hear about actual cases of satellite data use in other countries from PwC.
Tellus Satellite Cafe
Tellus Satellite Cafe is a community event where you can learn and communicate with other users and deepen your understanding of satellite data in a relaxed atmosphere as if in a cafe. This event is held almost monthly. We sometimes invite guests, and they run ideathons together with participants.
Tellus Satellite Challenge
Tellus Satellite Challenge is a data analysis contest, held as a part of Tellus business, to promote utilization of Tellus by introducing examples of satellite data utilization, discovering excellent data scientists, and making satellite data known to the public. Those winning the top prizes will also receive a monetary award. After you learn satellite data analysis in Tellus Satellite Boot Camp and/or Tellus Trainer, try this contest!
Summary
You can acquire the basic knowledge needed as a satellite data scientist by learning through our e-learning material, Tellus Trainer. Application starts on Friday, November 1, 2019.
If you are not yet ready for satellite data analysis, please feel free to participate in the individual consultation sessions we provide at our regularly scheduled events such as the Tellus Satellite Cafe and our Tellus Satellite Boot Camp.
