Slingshot Aerospaceが衛星衝突回避プラットフォームの商業化を目指し資金調達を発表
スペースデブリを監視し人工衛星を守る宇宙状況監視（Space Situational Awareness：以下SSA）サービスに取り組むSlingshot AerospaceがシリーズA-1の資金調達を実施し、2500万ドル（約29億円）を獲得しました。今回の資金調達は、シリコンバレーの著名な投資家であるTim Draper氏が率いるDraper AssociatesとATX Venture Partnersがリードインベスターを務めました。今回の資金調達でSlingshot Aerospaceの獲得総額は4200万ドル（約49億円）となりました。
Slingshot Aerospaceは、軌道上での衛星同士の衝突を回避するプラットフォームであるSlingshot Beaconを開発しています。Slingshot Beaconは、政府及び民間の衛星事業者同士が軌道上の衛星の状況を共有し、衛星事業者の安全で信頼できる運用を確保します。
Slingshot Aerospaceは、今回獲得した資金を活用しSlingshot Beaconの商業化を進めるほか、今後12カ月間で40名の新規雇用を行う予定のようです。
Slingshot Aerospaceの共同創業者兼CEOであるMelanie Stricklan氏は、今回の資金調達に合わせて以下のコメントを出しています。
Data trust and transparency are imperative for humanity to continue operating in space. Earth’s orbits should be considered critical infrastructure as humanity and our global economy depend heavily on it for safety and security. Slingshot is on a mission to accelerate space sustainability to ensure space continues to be the portal of progress and unity that the world needs for generations to come.

SSAサービスに取り組む企業として、米国のベンチャー企業であるLeoLabsや、カナダのベンチャー企業であるNorthStar Earth & Spaceなどがあります。すでに軌道上に多くの人工衛星があるなかで、軌道インフラのリスクを低減させるSSAサービスに引き続き注目です。
